Packaged Units

Learn what a packaged HVAC system includes, how heating configurations differ, and how to compare common efficiency ratings.

A packaged system places the main heating and cooling components together in one outdoor cabinet, set on a ground pad or roof and connected to the home’s ductwork. Types include cooling-only air conditioners, gas/electric combinations, heat pumps, and hybrid-heat systems that combine heat-pump and gas heat. Suitability depends on duct connections, installation site, and available fuel and electrical service.

SEER/SEER2 and EER/EER2 measure cooling efficiency, HSPF/HSPF2 measure heat-pump heating efficiency, and AFUE describes fuel-fired heating efficiency. These ratings measure different things and should be compared only on the same basis. Minimum standards and product combinations can change; check current requirements and matched-system specifications.
