A ventilator uses separate paths for stale indoor air leaving the building and filtered outdoor air entering. A heat-recovery core transfers some energy between the air streams, helping temper incoming air without eliminating ventilation energy loss. Ventilation can introduce fresh air without opening windows and may help reduce cooking and pet odors, smoke, and other pollutants. Performance depends on equipment and installation.

Mechanical ventilation is another way to introduce outdoor air without leaving windows open. It is not a substitute for identifying and safely controlling a pollutant source.

How it works

  • An indoor-air intake routes stale air through a heat-recovery core before exhausting it outdoors; a separate path supplies filtered outdoor air to living spaces.
  • The core transfers some heat between outgoing and incoming air. Product information cited up to 84% indoor-heat removal in the exhaust stream; actual recovery depends on the model and operating conditions.
  • A motor and electronic controls move air and adjust circulation modes or fan speed; a wall control may be used for operation.
  • Some designs use a damper-based defrost feature for cold weather and tool-free filter access; check the specific model for these features.
